Hi guys, I've been riding a few years, but not raced professionally yet. After watching a few of your races I see how competitive you guys really are. One question though........I've seen on here that a couple of you guys have had SERIOUS injuries (broken bones). Is your racing really that dangerous and how did these injuries happen? I still need to convince my dad ( I live at home ) that quad racing is relatively safe and I hope HE doesn't see these posts about broken arms and legs. Thanks guys and I hope to be competing with you soon! Motomadman aka: Danny

Racing is as safe as any other sport, but it carries a lot of risk. One thing I was told a long time ago about getting hurt racing is "It's not when, it's how bad" because I can gurantee you if you race semi seriously you will get hurt sooner or later. I personally have broke my back (not vertebrae thank god), and tore two shoulders apart, and tore cartiledge in my knee. Thats all from a slow ass C class rider. If thats what you really want to do go for it, just use your common sense and dont do things you aren't confident you can do. Take your time and don't ride over your head. Good luck man, just explain to him football cause more Death's every year than all forms of motocross combined.

I agree with #38 I dont think atv racing has any more injuries than any other type of sport but I do believe we recieve more "bad"publicity about our injuries than other sports. We mainly race Nationals now with over 600 riders at each event and we very rarely see any broken bones. The number of injuries compared to the number of riders is very low. The main thing that I could tell you is to ride at your skill level. This sport requires alot of rider skill. More skill than being able to chase a stupid ball around a field. The worst injury that my son Josh has recieved is a compound fracture to his arm when he was 10 years old. That happened while we were at a local track practicing. He was jumped on by a motorcyle. My point is, he didnt get hurt while racing or by any fault of his own. Just becareful and start out in the correct class for your skill level. Bill

in all forms of sports this applies to: if you play with rattlesnakes long enough your bound to get bit. Driving in a car is far more dangerous and if you feel safe then thats my point. To shed light on my broken arm, didnt happen while racing either, my transmission went in between gears while doing a triple that i had jumped 20 times. I was just practicing on a wednesday when i was suppose to be working.

With motocross, its not if but when. Ive been riding about 3 years and racing about a year. I broke my first bone about 3 weeks ago at bremen. It sucks cause it was a pretty bad break, compound fracture on both the bones in my lower leg. Like the other guys said just take your time and dont get overconfident (I will admit this is partly why I crashed). But also there are lots of guys racing and not alot of serious injuries. Ive taken a few spills but not till now have I had a serious injury. Racing is a risk and can be very dangerous, but if you ride safe you should be ok. I will say this though, eventualy you will get hurt, no telling how bad and I dont mean to be a downer but its reality.

My first post was Josh, this is me. If you race for any period of time you will suffer an injury, most likely a broken bone or worse. I have has the fortune to suffer only one semi-serious injury. I Compressed three vertebrae and nearly pushed one vertebrae out my spine, which took eight months of chiropractic care to fix and still bothers me. I am very lucky. I wouldn't consider any sport safe, but MX is definitely not one of the more tame sports. I would not even try if you are looking for an injury free avenue. Do not under estimate the sport, that is the biggest mistake you can make IMO.

Thanks for the input guys. I've been riding motocross since I was about 7 years old and have never broken a bone, but been banged up a few times. I've just gotten into the "quad thing" in the last couple of years and honestly, they look MORE dangerous than bikes. I'm going to go ahead and get into the racing though. As for the guy that broke his arm while practicing, I hope your boss wasn't too mad when you got hurt when you were supposed to be working! I can't get away with that one as I work for / with my dad! LOL I'll bet you had fun trying to think of what to tell him / her when it happened! LOL Hope you get back to racing soon! Well guys, I gotta get back to work. I'm on a quick break and just checking some stuff. Thanks again. Danny

Hey Danny, I broke my arm one time....ON THE MONKEY BARS haha. But as far as racing atv motocross goes, its all about calculating your risks and riding within your limits. It's that mindset that I hold true to, and it has worked pretty well for me so far; keeping me injury free for the most part. I have been racing atv's for about 3 years now, and I've taken my fair share of dirt samplers which is not fun as you probably arleady know from riding bikes! But if you can ride a dirt bike, you should have no problem riding a quad. I know a few guys that rode bikes before quads and they seemed to pick it up pretty well. I know from personal experiences that every time I twist the throttle on a dirt bike, I usually end up eating dirt! haha So I'm sticking w/ the quad! P.S. Hey chris, come on now...you jumped that triple 20 times? 19 of those times must have been in your mind because I saw your FIRST/LAST attempt at it! haha As a first hand witness to the wreck, I think you're exact words before you went out and broke your arm were "I know I can jump that triple if that little kid on the 80 can"...

haha i hear ya! I will give you that, you were riding good that day. As far as bremen goes, they did make some changes since you were there last....they added a straight after that double after the finish, so you can actually jump it safely now...and then they added a really niced high banked berm leading into a pretty tough whoop section right before the table over by the woods. They also added a new camel back beside the big table, and I believe they added a new double double section, but I have yet to ride on it since those 2 new jumps. Are you going to be able to make it this weekend?
